Q: What is the best way to decoupage fabric cut-outs to my fabric project?
A:
First, prepare your project surface. Then using the Martha Stewart Crafts Soft Bristle Decoupage Brushes, apply one even, smooth coat of Martha Stewart Crafts Fabric to Fabric Decoupage Finish to the area on the selected fabric surface that you would like to decoupage.
For the strongest bond, allow it to dry slightly (about 2-3 minutes) before placing your decoupage fabric cut-out. To place your decoupage fabric cut-outs, apply a smooth, even coat of Martha Stewart Crafts Fabric to Fabric Decoupage Finish to the backside and place onto the pre-decoupaged surface. Use your fingers, a Martha Stewart Craft Squeegee or a Martha Stewart Crafts Decoupage Brayer to press fabric onto the surface. Smoothing from the center towards the edge of the fabric to remove air bubbles and excess decoupage finish. Wipe away excess decoupage with a damp paper towel. Once in place and smoothed, allow to dry 2 hours. When completely dry, brush a smooth application of Martha Stewart Crafts Fabric to Fabric Decoupage Finish over the fabric cut-out, making sure to seal the edges of the fabric (extend your decoupage at least ¼-inch past the outline of your fabric cut-out or fabric lace trim to ensure that it is sealed). Allow to dry 2 hours and repeat. If decoupaged item will serve a purpose other than decorative, a third application of Martha Stewart Crafts Fabric to Fabric Decoupage Finish is recommended. To cure, air dry project for 72 hours in a mild dry room. To expedite curing, allow project to dry a minimum of 24 hours, then iron (no steam) using a pressing cloth with a small weave on low-medium setting for 30 seconds in a small circular motion. Do not use a towel as a pressing cloth, as it can leave marks or stick to the decoupaged project. You can also force dry in a dryer on the highest setting for 1 hour. Once cured, fabric project can be hand washed or machine-washed on a gentle cycle using cool water and mild detergent. Do not use fabric softener.
