Other Supplies

3 different sizes of Styrofoam eggs, 3 different sizes of round paper mache boxes, Cardboard box (medium size), 15 wine corks (for 3 deer), 6 small birch wood rounds, Brown chenille stems, Black and red buttons for noses, Scissors, Liner brush (or fine black permanent marker), ¾" flat brush, Hot glue, 1/8" hole punch, Christmas ribbon, Craft knife

Instructions

  1. Mom or Dad cut strips of ¾" wide pieces of cardboard from box and then cut them into squares. Make a hole in each square with a 1/8" hole punch. Make enough for all three deer. You may need to go back and cut more depending on how long you make the legs and arms. Cut the ears from the cardboard as well. Refer to patterns given.
  2. Cut more strips ½" wide for the antlers. Cut two 3" pieces from the ½" strips and then four 1-1/4". Make the antlers by gluing the 1-1/4" pieces to the 3" pieces. Repeat for all the male deer.
  3. Basecoat the boxes and the eggs with Chestnut. Allow to dry.
  4. Paint the corks Black. Allow to dry.
  5. Make a hole in the sides of the boxes for the arms and in front for the legs. Also make a hole in the end of the corks for the chenille stems to fit.
  6. The kids can now start to assemble the legs and arms by feeding the cardboard squares onto the chenille stems. Add the black corks to the ends of the arms and legs. Place the other ends of the legs and arms through the hole in the boxes. Make a loop to keep it secure.
  7. For the heads paint or use the marker to make the eye on the wood rounds. Glue the eyes, ears, button nose and antler into the Styrofoam head.
  8. Glue a cork onto the lid for the neck and then add the head.
  9. Tie a bow from Christmas ribbon and glue to the neck.
  10. Do not make antlers for the doe.
