Painted Pear Canning Jar

Priscilla Hauser

With "I can teach you to paint" as her motto, First Lady of Decorative Painting Priscilla Hauser has inspired thousands of decorative painters since taking her first tole painting class in the early 1960s.

In the beginning, Priscilla's path was quite different. "Mother and dad wouldn't pay for art school, so that's how I wound up in dental hygiene," she admits. Her interest in art prevailed, and she decided to learn how to paint. Her neighbors admired her work, and encouraged her to begin teaching classes in her garage. Classes outgrew her garage, and she opened Priscilla's Little Red Tole House.

In 1972, Priscilla gathered 21 people in Tulsa, and founded the National Society of Tole & Decorative Painting (today, the Society of Decorative Painting).

A world renowned teacher, author and decorative painter, Priscilla has published many books with Plaid, and is currently their spokeswoman for FolkArt.

Instructions

  1. Wash glass canning jar in warm soapy water, rinse well and thoroughly dry.
  2. Moisten paper towel with rubbing alcohol and wipe entire surface of the glass to remove any remaining grease, dirt or soap film. Allow to dry.
  3. Load a wide flat brush with FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Grotto and smoothly apply paint to exterior of glass caning jar. Allow to dry.
  4. Set wet jar aside and allow to dry 2 hours prior to distressing.
  5. Sand painted jar using fine grit sandpaper to create a distressed, time-worn look.
  6. The next step is to trace and transfer the background shape of the pear, (a rectangle). Trace pear pattern onto tracing paper; flip traced pattern over and apply white chalk to the pattern lines. Flip tracing paper over once more, position (chalk side down) on prepared jar and retrace rectangle shape. To keep lines straight when painting, tape along straight lines using stencil tape.
  7. Load large flat brush with Patina and neatly basecoat the rectangle shape. Allow to dry. If necessary, reapply to create an opaque background.
  8. Once dry, carefully remove stencil tape. Reposition traced pattern back over painted rectangle; transfer pear, stem and leaf pattern.
Colorbook paint pear – Daffodil Yellow, stem – Bark Brown, and leaf – Thicket. Allow to dry and reapply to create opaque coverage.
  9. Load large flat brush with Blending Gel.
  10. Sideload brush with Bark Brown and paint along pear shape to create shading to the left side of the pear. When painting, keep Bark Brown to the outside edge of the pear shape.
  11. Load large flat brush with Blending Gel.
  12. Side load brush with Citrus Green and/or Fresh Foliage. Keeping Blending Gel to the interior of the pear, paint a green highlight along the right side of the pear.
  13. To create the “smile” of the pear, sideload a smaller flat brush with Bark Brown and paint the smile keeping the Bark Brown side of the brush towards the bottom of the pear.
  14. Shade the base of the Bark Brown stem with a touch of Licorice.
  15. Load the large flat brush with Blending Gel; lightly paint Blending Gel at the base of the leaf.
  16. Shade the base of the leaf by sideloading a large flat brush with Ink Spot; apply paint at the base.
  17. Apply Blending Gel to the remaining area of the leaf.
  18. Load flat brush with Fresh Foliage and paint highlight to the leaf. Using the chisel edge of the brush, touch the leaf edge, apply pressure, pull and lift quickly allowing the Fresh Foliage to lightly blend into the darker areas of the leaf.
  19. Load a large flat brush with Blending Gel.
  20. Sideload the brush with Bark Brown and a touch of Licorice; paint a shadow keeping the paint side of the brush closest to the pear.
  21. Embellish your painted pear by “flyspecking” or splattering Bark Brown. To flyspeck: thin Bark Brown with a small amount of water to an ink-like consistency. Load an old toothbrush with thinned paint. Holding the brush with the bristles toward your artwork, run your thumb over bristles and watch the tiny flecks of color fly over your surface!
  22. Lastly, paint a Licorice brush stroke trim around the background shape. Load a No. 1 Liner brush with thinned Licorice; thin with water to an ink-like consistency. Paint a simple comma stroke border. If desired, paint a comma stroke border on the jar lid too.
  23. Complete the jar by painting a small wood knob Licorice. When dry, glue knob to jar lid and tie a black organza ribbon around jar lid.
