Classroom Birthdays Sign

By: Julie Lewis
Julie Lewis
Julie Lewis
Julie Lewis was destined to be an artist…at least that was what she was told from Kindergarten on. Born outside of Cleveland, Ohio, she was blessed to have been given an incredible art education all through her school years and from her creative and talented parents. Growing up in a world where every day brought some new creative adventure, it was no surprise that she went on to graduate from the Cleveland Institute of Art with a B.F.A. in graphic design. Her professional life included working in many fields from industrial advertising to American Greetings. Most gratifying was working as a designer for the largest craft company, Plaid Enterprises in Georgia where she now resides. She paints and creates felt soft sculptures inspired by said paintings and now sells them through her shop STELLALOLA on Etsy. She is inspired by many things around her…most importantly, a wonderful family, an insanely happy German Shepherd and one stoic Alaskan Malamut.
This DIY teacher classroom decor project will brighten up every birthday.

  1. Paint twelve wood sticks with Sawgrass, Summer Peach and Jamaican Sea. When dry, paint Wicker White stripes diagonally to create candles.
  2. Stencil abbreviated months of the year on the candles vertically using Licorice and Peel & Stick alphabet.
  3. Drill small holes in both sides of wood circles. Paint using same colors as candles. Write children’s names with marker.
  4. Cut chenille stem into small strips for wicks. Cut out twelve gold glitter flames. Glue flames to wicks, then to backs of candles.
  5. Apply several coats of chalkboard paint to canvas allowing dry time between coats. When dry, condition the surface by rubbing side of chalk over canvas and wipe with paper towel.
  6. Insert twelve eye screws along one side of canvas. Create small ‘s” hooks from wire.
  7. Glue candles along opposite side of canvas.
  8. Write saying with chalk on canvas.
