Instructions

  1. Basecoat your canvas with Wicker White and allow to dry.
  2. When dry, measure and mark desired sized patchwork sections using ruler and pencil.
  3. Load 3/4" Flat with both Wicker White and Yellow Ochre.
  4. Paint main body of canvas with short, overlapping brush strokes in a criss-cross pattern. Do not over blend. Paint smaller areas using this slip slap technique with Wicker White and Yellow Citron. Let dry.
  5. Cut desired design elements from Rub-On Pattern sheet.
  6. Arrange elements on project surface dark side down and secure with tape.
  7. Using flat end of Rub-On Tool, rub along pattern lines using gentle pressure to transfer pattern onto project surface. If desired, transfer only main pattern lines. Paint basic design shapes and when dry, transfer detail lines. (A good example of this technique is the monarch butterfly – transfer only the main pattern lines, base in color and transfer detail wing pattern lines when paint is dry.)
  8. Monarch Butterfly: Load #10 Flat with Pure Orange; basecoat inner wing sections.
  9. Using same brush loaded with Licorice, basecoat body and outer wing sections.
  10. Load #1 Liner with thinned Licorice; paint antennae.
  11. Paint Pure Orange and Lipstick Red side by side on inner wings next to body using #10 Flat. Using Blending Tool to shade.
  12. Highlight edges of inner wings. Paint Pure Orange and Yellow Light side by side. Continue, using Blending Tool to blend.
  13. When dry, rub wing detail pattern lines.
  14. Load #1 Liner with thinned Licorice; paint wing sections.
  15. Paint detail specks on wings and highlight stroke on body using the #1 Liner and thinned Wicker White.
  16. Bumble Bee: Load #10 Flat with Yellow Light; paint bee body.
  17. Paint wings Wicker White using same brush.
  18. Using same brush, paint head, antennae, and upper body Licorice.
  19. Load #1 Liner with thinned Licorice; paint hairy body sections.
  20. Using same brush and paint outline wings.
  21. Dragonfly: Load handle end of #10 Flat with Hauser Green Medium; paint dragonfly body dots, beginning at head and descending in size to the tail.
  22. Load #1 Liner with thinned Hauser Green Medium; paint antennae.
  23. Load #10 Flat with Wicker White. Paint dragonfly wings.
  24. Using #1 Liner loaded with thinned Wicker White, paint small highlight strokes on each body section.
  25. Load #1 Liner with thinned Hauser Green Medium and outline wings.
  26. Using same brush and paint, add detail lines inside dragonfly wings.
  27. Coneflower: Load #10 Flat with Hauser Green Medium; paint stems using tip of flat brush.
  28. Using same brush and color, paint leaves.
  29. Load #10 Flat with Yellow Citron and highlight top half of each leaf and stem.
  30. Load #8 Round with Lavender; paint coneflower petals stroking towards flower center. Re-stroke a couple petals again to create a layered look.
  31. Using same brush, highlight a few petals on the right with Wicker White.
  32. Load #1 Liner with thinned True Blue; paint detail lines from center to shade each petal.
  33. Load #8 Round with Yellow Light; paint flower center.
  34. Using same brush, shade flower center along base with Yellow Ochre. Add a touch of Burnt Sienna to deepen shading.
  35. Using handle end of #1 Liner, paint Burnt Sienna dots at base of flower center. Add Yellow Light dots. Highlight top right of flower center with Wicker White using #8 Round.
  36. Lettering: Load #1 Liner with thinned Hauser Green Medium; paint within pattern lines.
  37. Fill #1 Liner with thinned Licorice; paint shadow line on the left side of each letter.
