How To Use Mod Podge

Mod Podge is water-based and non-toxic. Use on wood, furniture, craft projects, decorative glass, metal, and more. Works well with papers of all types from napkins to gift wrap. All formulas dry clear and quickly. Use our classic formulas (Gloss, Matte, and Satin) with basic applications for indoor use only. Use our specialty formulas for specific project needs including Dishwasher Safe, Outdoor, Fabric, Photo Transfer, and so much more!

Surface Prep:

Make sure all desired surfaces have been thoroughly cleaned prior to decoupaging to promote better adhesion and to ensure a smooth finish when the project is completed. When applying to glass surfaces, make sure to clean the surface using rubbing alcohol. Basecoat surface as needed.

Directions:

Apply with a soft bristle brush or foam applicator. To eliminate tackiness, apply a layer of Mod Podge Clear Acrylic Sealer. Store at room temperature. Wipe excess Mod Podge from around lid to keep a tight seal. Close container after each use. Clean up while wet with soap and water. Full cure time 4 weeks.

Common Mod Podge Techniques:

Glue:

Apply a moderate coat to surface and paper. Apply paper to surface, glue-to-glue (wet-to-wet). Working from the center outward, smooth out all air bubbles and wrinkles. Allow each coat to dry 30 minutes. For more protection, apply additional coats.

Sealer:

Apply thin coat. Decoupage sealer; not an all-purpose sealer.

Quick Finish:

Apply a smooth, thin coat.

Built-Up Finish:

Apply at least 5 coats, allow to dry 30 minutes between coats. Wet sand with 400 grit sandpaper until smooth. Wipe dry. Polish with #0000 steel wool. Wipe with damp cloth. If desired, apply more coats and wet sand between coats. Let dry.

Textured Finish:

Apply thick coat imitating artist’s brush strokes or stipple with sponge.

Puzzle Saver:

Protect work surface under finished puzzle. Apply Mod Podge evenly over entire puzzle with brush or squeegee; be sure to cover all cracks. Let dry completely, 30 minutes. Repeat on back of puzzle. For extra protection, apply additional coasts to front and back of puzzle.

Clean Up and After Care:

Clean brushes and tools while wet with soap and water. Clean project surfaces with a soft cloth moistened with warm water and mild soap. For more information and product details, read our ULTIMATE GUIDE TO MOD PODGE.
