How to Create a Patina Finish Using FolkArt Home Decor Chalk with Donna Dewberry

How to Create a Patina Finish Using FolkArt Home Decor Chalk with Donna Dewberry

Today, let's learn about how to create a patina finish!  Not sure what a  "patina" finish is?  Patina is a green or brown film on the surface of copper, bronze or other similar metals that is produced over time by oxidation; basically it is the tarnish or corrosion that occurs when exposed to sulfur or oxide compounds.  You often see patina finishes on statues in gardens!

So now let's learn how to create that same warm, wonderful finish and bring it indoors!  Don't you just love the metal candle lantern project below?  Using FolkArt Home Decor Chalk and a little FolkArt Metallic Copper paint, you too can create a patina finish that is quick, easy and fun to do!

Let's begin by gathering a few necessary supplies .....

  • 34803  FolkArt Home Decor Chalk - Patina
  • 34154  FolkArt Home Decor Chalk - Salmon Coral
  • 34165  FolkArt Home Decor Chalk - Java
  • 34170  FolkArt Home Decor - Clear Wax
  • 34919  FolkArt Home Decor - Sponge
  • 34909  FolkArt Home Decor - Small Paint and Wax Brush Set
  • K664  FolkArt Acrylic Paint - Metallic Copper
  • Miscellaneous Supplies:  Brush basin or container for water, Paper Towels, Foam plate, White cotton lint-free cloth

And now let's watch Donna Dewberry show us exactly how easy it is to create a patina finish step-by-step on a new store-bought metal lantern.

Wasn't that easy?  Doesn't that look fun?  I promise you, once you give this painting technique a try, you will want to do it again on another piece.  And take a look below for inspiration ... not all painted patina surfaces have to be metal to start with.  The shutter / corner shelf project featured below illustrates how a wood surface can be enhanced with a painted patina finish!  You will find the instructions for this adorable project here.

Now go out there and have some fun painting a patina finish!
