FolkArt Enamels Acrylic Paint for Glass

FolkArt Enamel Glass Paint FAQ

Yes, you can wash your painted pieces with FolkArt Enamels in the dishwasher without chipping, cracking, or fading after first curing it in the oven by following the directions below:
  1. Allow painted item to dry for 24 hours to be sure all layers of paint have dried.
  2. Place project in a cool oven, as the glass must heat gradually with the oven to avoid breakage; do not place glass in a hot oven.
  3. Set oven temperature to 350ºF.
  4. Once temperature has reached 350ºF, allow the project to bake for 30 minutes.
  5. After 30 minutes, turn the oven off and let glass cool down completely before removing from the oven.
  6. Do not use for 72 hours.
In addition, using the Clear Medium over your design will help ensure the longevity of your painting. Learn more on curing painted glass projects.
No, thinning FolkArt Enamels with water compromises the integrity of the paint formula and will prevent the paint from properly adhering to your glass surface.
  1. Clean glass or glazed ceramics with alcohol.
  2. Shake paint before applying.
  3. Paint design. For best results use Clear Medium over your design to help ensure there is enough paint for the design to properly adhere to your surface. Do not wet paintbrush with water. To change colors while painting, use a paper towel and pull out excess paint.

Cautions:
  • Do not use in direct contact with food.
  • Do not paint within 4/5” of top rim of glasses or mugs.
  • Reverse painting on the back of glass plates is recommended if plate is to be used with food.
  • Do not apply Clear Medium to the entire surface as streaks may appear. Only apply Clear Medium over your design.
  • Items painted are not microwavable.
FolkArt Enamels dry to a translucent to opaque finish. However, if you’d like to create a more transparent look, combine one part FolkArt Enamels with one part FolkArt Clear Medium. Paint as normal.
FolkArt® Enamels are non-toxic,however it is best to keep painted designs and food serving areas separate so that paint never comes into contact with food. When painting a plate for actual use, you must paint on the back using a method called Reverse Painting.
Reverse painting refers to the technique where painting is done on the back of clear glass (such as a plate) but is seen through the glass from the front. Therefore, the design is painted in reverse, with details first and basecoat last. When you have painted a clear glass plate with this technique, food can be placed onto front of plate.
Wash with soap and water. Clean area to be painted with rubbing alcohol.
You can stencil, spounce or brush on. The colors will dry to a matte finish and have the same durability of regular FolkArt Enamels.
Mix one part Frost Medium and one part paint. We recommend that you mix more than you think you will need to ensure color and texture consistency for your entire project.
Add a layer of Clear Medium on top of the painting.
Are you handwashing these items? If not, are you placing them only in the top rack of the dishwasher? If so the problem may be that you did not use enough paint. You can either go over your design with more paint or with the Clear Medium. The Clear Medium will help the paint adhesion and should only be applied over your design, otherwise you may see streaks. Once you go over your design you will have to bake your glassware again or allow it to cure for 21 days. If painted glassware was not properly cured, it can cause flaking. Any water used on brushed or in paint will cause it to not adhere well.
FolkArt® Enamels Clear Medium is used to create a transparent look without compromising the paint’s adhesion. It can also be used with the double-load technique to achieve just the right paint consistency for effects such as shadows and shading. FolkArt® Enamels Clear Medium can be used to seal painted areas as well.
DO NOT USE WATER. Use a paper towel to pull out as much color as you can. If you would like to remove additional color, you may use the FolkArt Enamel Clear Medium instead of water and then use the paper towel to pull out excess color. Now you are ready to load the new color.
