Wood letter/key keeper(#17238 by Walnut Hollow www.walnuthollow.com)
#6 flat brush
#8 round brush
#1 liner brush
1” sponge brush
Black fine point permanent pen
Cellulose sponge


Preparation

  1. Sand wood lightly.
  2. Using Glazing Medium + Hauser Green Medium, lightly brush this staining color over entire wood piece. Wipe off excess while wet. Keep the center lighter and the edges a little darker. Let dry. Sand lightly.
  3. Transfer design to wood piece.
  4. With the black permanent pen, retrace just the butterfly.

Paint the Design

Butterfly:


  1. Paint the dark areas with Pure Blac~ that has been slightly watered down for a soft black look. Let dry.
  2. Paint inside wings with Pure Orange and Yellow Ochre, placing colors randomly.
  3. Paint spots with Titanium White. Let dry.
  4. Again retrace black lines with the permanent pen.

Flowers:


  1. Load the #8 round brush with Blending Gel, then double load it with Yellow Ochre and Yellow Light. Create petals with comma strokes, pulling petals toward the center of the calyxes.
  2. Highlight with dirty brush and Titanium White.

Leaves & Stems:


  1. Paint leaves with an "S" stroke, using a #6 flat brush double loaded with Hauser Green Dark and Hauser Green Medium.
  2. Highlight leaves with Yellow Light and Titanium White.
  3. Paint vines with a #6 flat brush double loaded with Hauser Green Dark and Hauser Green Medium. Highlight with a dirty brush and Titanium White and Yellow Light. Let dry.

Lettering:

Write lettering with the black permanent pen.

Finish

Let dry for six days. Then seal with satin varnish.
