3-part wooden fire screen
Old toothbrush
220 grit sandpaper


PREPARATION:

  1. Remove hinges. Sand wooden surfaces smooth. Wipe away dust.
  2. Base paint with Midnight. Let dry.
  3. Trace and transfer patterns.

PAINT THE DESIGN

See the Snowman Technique Workshop and the Birdhouse Technique Workshop for more information on brushes and colors to use and techniques.

Open Side of Screen:


  1. Load scruffy brush with Wicker White. Pick up a small amount of Maple Syrup on one comer. Pounce snow along bottom.
  2. Double load scruffy brush with Wicker White and Butter Pecan. Pounce snowmen's bodies, working from bottom to top.
  3. Dot eyes, mouth, and buttons with licorice. Paint other mouth with inky licorice. Highlight eyes with Wicker White.
  4. Double load #6 flat with Napthol Crimson and School Bus Yellow. Paint noses on chisel edge. Add details with 2, Burnt Umber, using a #2 script liner.
  5. Load a #6 flat with Wicker White and 3. Burnt Umber. Paint branch arms and 4 other branches. "
  6. Paint felt hat.
  7. Paint stocking cap and scarves.
  8. Load mini scruffy brush with Yellow 5 Ochre + Wicker White. Pounce ear . muffs.
  9. Load #6 flat with licorice. Paint band between ear muffs.
  10. Load the handle end of a #6 flat with Napthol Crimson. Make dots for heart. Load brush with Napthol Crimson. Connect dots to make hearts.

Birdhouses:

  1. Double load a #12 flat brush with Burnt Umber and Wicker White. Paint birdhouse poles, using the chisel edge of the brush.
  2. Paint birdhouses, using Birdhouse Technique Workshop and project photo as guides.
  3. Double load mini scruffy brush with Wicker White and Butter Pecan. Pounce snow on birdhouses.
  4. Load mini scruffy brush with Wicker White. Paint smoke.
  5. Add lettering to signs and birdhouses . ("Welcome," "Gone for the Winter,", "Gone South," "Welcome Lovers").

Wreath & Tree:

  1. Load scruffy brush with Green Forest and Wicker White. Pounce wreath. Let dry.
  2. Double load #6 flat with Berry Wine and Napthol Crimson. Paint ribbon on wreath.
  3. Load handle end of #6 flat with Napthol Crimson. Dot berries on wreath.
  4. Load #2 script liner with Wicker White. Highlight berries and bow. Let dry.
  5. Double load #12 flat with Green Forest and Wicker White. Stroke tree from top to bottom, working up tree from bottom to top. Let dry.
  6. Load a #6 flat with Wicker White and Burnt Umber. Touch up branches.

Birds:

  1. Double load #6 flat with Napthol Crimson and Berry Wine. Paint bird's heads, then bodies, then wings and tail feathers with Berry Wine on outer edge. Paint hat on bird on center panel and scarf on hat on left panel.
  2. Load #2 script liner with School Bus Yellow .Paint beaks.
  3. Using handle end of #2 script liner, dot eye with licorice.
  4. Load #2 script liner with Wicker White. Highlight eyes and wings. Add stripes and fringe on bird's scarf. Paint fur band and pompom on bird's hat.
  5. Load #2 script liner with Licorice. Outline beaks.

Closed Side of Screen:

  1. Double load 3/4 flat with Wicker White and Burnt Umber. Using chisel edge of brush, leading with Wicker White, paint branches.
  2. Double load # 12 flat with Green Forest and Sunflower. Using chisel edge of brush, leading with Sunflower, paint needles with a light pressure, picking up , the bristles to make pointed ends.
  3. Double load #12 flat with Napthol Crimson and Berry Wine. Paint bird's head, then body, then wings and tail feathers with Berry Wine on outer edge.
  4. Load #2 script liner with School Bus Yellow .Paint beaks.
  5. Using handle end of #2 script liner, dot eye with licorice.
  6. Load #2 script liner with Wicker White. Highlight eyes.
  7. Double load mini scruffy brush with Wicker White and a touch of Butter Pecan. Pounce snow on branches and boughs, placing Butter Pecan edge toward top. Let.dry.

FINISH:


  1. Using Spatter Tool, spatter both sides with inky Wicker White. Let dry.
  2. Load # 12 flat with Wicker White. Letter "Snow Lovers" at top of center panel. Let dry.
  3. Spray with two to three coats Matte Sealer. Let dry between coats.
  4. Replace hinges.
