PREPARE & BASE PAINT
- Prepare wood according to instructions on Tips & Techniques page.
- Base paint churn and wooden plate with Licorice. Let dry.
- Trace and transfer pattern, except the design on the front pot and the corn kernels (they will be transferred later).
PAINT THE DESIGN Use Blending Gel Medium to aid in blending colors. Use photo as a guide for color placement.
Plate & Shading:
- Base plate with Medium Gray.
- Shade plate rim with Licorice, floating the color. Also shade around candle holder and corn husks and next to tall candle holder.
- Lighten rim of plate with Wicker White.
Short Candle Holder & Candle:
- Base holder with Burnt Umber.
- Shade with Burnt Umber + Licorice. Lighten with Raw Sienna and Wicker White. Using Blending Gel, add choppy strokes to suggest wood grain.
- Highlight on rim and left side with Wicker White + Raw Sienna.
- Paint candle base with Red Light. Shade with Burnt Carmine. Lighten with Medium Yellow + Wicker White. Highlight with Wicker White.
- Base wick with Red Light. Shade at base with Licorice. Add a little Medium Yellow to top.
- Paint flame with Red Light - Medium Yellow - Wicker White - tints of Slate Blue on right side. Highlight with Wicker White. Dry brush Medium Yellow around flame for glow.
Tall Candle Holder & Candle:
- Base with Raw Sienna.
- Shade right side, inside around candle, and under rim with Burnt Umber. Lighten left side with Raw Sienna + Taffy. With Blending Gel + Burnt Umber, suggest wood grain, using the chisel edge of brush.
- Paint candle with Slate Blue. Shade inside and at bottom with Licorice. Lighten left side with Wicker White and add Wicker White around top edge of candle.
- Paint wax runs with Slate Blue + Wicker White. Highlight with Wicker White. Underline with Licorice.
- Paint wick with Red Light. Shade at base with Licorice.
- Paint flame with Red Light - Medium Yellow - Wicker White - tints of Slate Blue on right side. Highlight with Wicker White. Dry brush Medium Yellow around flame for glow.
Crocks:
- Base with two coats Taffy. Use Blending Gel to blend.
- Paint insides of pots with Burnt Umber on left side. Add Licorice to darken. Blend out on right sides. Add Taffy and blend into Burnt Umber, leaving a line of Burnt Umber at rim. On inside of front pot, add a little Slate Blue + Wicker White.
- Add Wicker White lightly around rims. Highlight rims on left sides with Wicker White.
- On bands at top, apply shading on right side with Slate Blue. Blend into Taffy. Add more Slate Blue and Licorice to darken. Leave a reflected light on right side of Taffy. Add strong Highlight on left with Wicker White.
- Shade under top bands with Burnt Umber.
- On back pot, add Slate Blue to dirty brush and shade around front of pot, working paint and brush very loosely to suggest texture. Darken on left side next to front pot with Licorice, blending into Slate Blue. Use Blending Gel Medium and let Taffy background show through. Add more Taffy, if needed, to blend. Highlight with Wicker White.
- On front pot, start on right with Slate Blue, using dirty brush, work up and down around corn husks and under band at top. Add Wicker White as you work to the left side. Add Wicker White for a strong highlight. Leave reflected light on right side. Dry brush tints of Red Light on right side and on top of pot. Let dry.
- Transfer design to front of pot. (You can paint this freehand if you like—it does not have to be perfect.) Paint design with Navy Blue. Highlight the top with Wicker White.
Branch:
- Base with Burnt Umber.
- Lighten some with Raw Sienna - Taffy.
- Paint berries with Red Light, using handle end of brush. Dot with Wicker White.
Corn:
- Base where corn will be with Burnt Umber. Let dry.
- Transfer pattern for corn kernels.
- Load a liner brush with Taffy and pull a thin line from back to front. Make four more lines—the kernels will be between these rows.
- Using the chisel edge of a #2 or #4 brush, pick up one of these colors: Red Light - Medium Yellow - Raw Sienna - Dioxazine Purple - True Blue - Burnt Sienna. Use several colors on each ear of corn.
- Go back with same color + Wicker White to lighten center of each kernel of corn. Highlight each with Wicker White.
