PREPARATION:
- Transfer design to watercolor paper.
- Cut paper around design to 3-1/2" x 9".
- Shade around edges of paper with Burnt Umber. Let dry.
- Tear edges of paper using the art deckle ruler to a finished size of 2-3/4" x 8-1/2". By tearing edges after shading, the deckled edges will be white, forming a border.
PAINT THE DESIGN:
St. Nick:
- Basecoat face with Almond Parfait. Shade with Burnt Umber.
- Paint cheeks and nose with Barnyard Red.
- Basecoat beard with Warm White. Finish shading after coat is complete.
- Basecoat red stripes of hat with Barnyard Red. Shade them with Burnt Carmine. Basecoat gold stripes with Sunflower and shade with Raw Sienna. Basecoat tassel with Sunflower and shade with Raw Sienna. Basecoat cuff of hat with Italian Sage and shade with Green Umber.
- Basecoat coat with Italian Sage and shade with Green Umber. Paint cuffs the same as hat. Basecoat buttons with Clay Bisque and shade them with Burnt Umber.
- Pull strands of beard out over coat with Warm White. Dip a brush filled with Warm White into Pure Black, then pull through beard to create streaks. Paint on a few strands of hair from under hat.
- Basecoat mittens with Warm White. Shade with Burnt Umber. Paint stripes with Acorn Brown.
- Basecoat shoes with Acorn Brown and shade with Burnt Umber.
Tree:
- Basecoat trunk and branches with Acorn Brown. Shade with Maple Syrup.
- Paint on needles with Green Umber.
- Basecoat star with Sunflower. Shade with Raw Sienna.
Basket:
- Basecoat with Clay Bisque.
- Shade with Burnt Umber.
FINISH:
- When dry, draw on linework details and outlining with the black pen.
- Spatter with Burnt Umber, using the toothbrush.
- Spray front and back of paper with a light even coat of matte acrylic sealer.
