Watercolor paper - #140 cold press
White envelope to fit 5" x 7" card (use bubble wrap envelope if including the pin)
Skating Santa wood cutout (cut by pattern from 1/8" wood)
Black Zig permanent ink pen
size #005
Art deckle ruler
Toothbrush
Craft knife
Bar pin back - 1"
Hot glue gun and glue sticks

PREPARATION:

  1. Sand wood cutout smooth and wipe away dust.
  2. Cut watercolor paper to 7" x 10-1/2". Tear one 7" edge using art deckle ruler. This will be open edge of card front. Measure and mark paper at center, then fold and crease for a 5" x 7" card with side fold.
  3. Spray a light coat of matte acrylic sealer on lower left corner of envelope where design will be.
  4. Transfer designs to card, wood cutout, and lower left front corner of envelope. Do not transfer any interior details. (NOTE: If you do not wish to make the pin, you can transfer the skating Santa pattern directly to the card.)

PAINT THE DESIGN:

Snow, Ice, & Sky:

  1. Basecoat snow with Warm White. Shade with Slate Blue.
  2. Basecoat ice with Dove Gray. Shade with Indigo. Brush over ice here and there with streaks of Wicker White.
  3. Basecoat sky with Dove Gray. Shade at the horizon with Slate Blue.

Trees:

  1. Transfer or freehand trees.
  2. Paint tree trunks with Burnt Umber.
  3. Paint needles with Green Umber.

Background:

Float Burnt Umber around edges of card and in lower left corner of envelope.

Wreath (On Envelope):

  1. Basecoat with Italian Sage. Shade with Green Umber.
  2. Pull out needles around edges with Green Umber.
  3. Paint on highlighted areas of pine branches with Italian Sage.
  4. Paint berries with dots of Dove Gray.

Santa:

  1. Basecoat face with Almond Parfait. Shade with Burnt Umber.
  2. Paint cheeks and nose with Barnyard Red.
  3. Basecoat hat and coat with Barnyard Red. Shade with Burnt Carmine. Basecoat tassel on hat with Buttercrunch. Shade it with Burnt Umber.
  4. Basecoat the green squares of checkerboard trim around bottom of coat, cuffs, and hat with Italian Sage. Shade them with Green Umber. Basecoat beige checkerboard squares with Clay Bisque. Shade them with Burnt Umber.
  5. Basecoat buttons with Clay Bisque. Shade with Burnt Umber.
  6. Basecoat mittens with Clay Bisque. Shade with Burnt Umber. Paint stripes on mittens with diluted Indigo.
  7. Paint wreath the same as for envelope.
  8. Basecoat beard with Warm White. Pull streaks of hair out and over his coat and wreath. Dip a brush filled with Warm White into Pure Black and pull through the wet basecoat to create shading to define mustache and strands of hair.
  9. Basecoat boots of skates with Country Twill. Shade with Burnt Umber.
  10. Basecoat blades of skates with Light Gray. Shade with Charcoal Grey. Paint areas inside blades with Dove Gray. Shade these areas with Slate Blue.

Finish

  1. Brush wood cutout with a light even coat of slightly diluted waterbase varnish. Let dry completely.
  2. Brush a light coat of antiquing diluted 50/50 with water on wood cutout. Use antiquing to stain sides and back of wood.
  3. When completely dry, draw linework details and outlining and lettering on wood cutout, card, and envelope with the black pen.
  4. Spatter all surfaces with Warm White, using the toothbrush.
  5. Hot-glue pin back to backside of wood.
  6. Place wood cutout in position on card design and mark on card the placement of pin’s position. Cut two 1/4" vertical slits in card with craft knife on these markings. Make them close enough together to allow pin bar to slide through card and fasten easily.
  7. Attach pin in place on card front.
