Medium size kettle gourd - approx. 11 1/2" tall x 7 1/2" diameter
Lampshade to fit size of gourd
Oval wood plaque (for base) - 14" x 7 1/2" x 3/4" thick
#8 flat shader brush
#10 flat shader brush
Old scruffy brush
1/2" rake brush
Liner brush
Cork type electric lamp adapter
Wood picket fence - 7" long x 4" high
Wood napkin holder (to fit behind fence)
Wooden sled or toy
Small evergreen tree
Artificial pine sprigs
Toothbrush for spattering
Snow textured paint
Hot glue gun and glue sticks


PREPARATION


  1. Basecoat gourd up to hat area with Navy Blue, using the 1" stencil brush.
  2. Basecoat hat area with Raspberry Wine. Shade with Burnt Carmine. Let gourd dry.
  3. Transfer outline of face, snowman,Santa's arms, and the basic beard/hair shape.
  4. Paint top surface of oval wood plaque (base for lamp)with Raspberry Wine. Let dry. Paint rim of oval with Green Forest.
  5. Hot-glue picket fence to a wood-like napkin holder (made of 3/4" wood) to hold Christmas cards. Paint with Tapioca.




PAINT THE DESIGN


  1. Basecoat face with Skin tone.
  2. Paint whites of eyes with Tapioca.
  3. Shade face with Burnt Sienna.
  4. Float cheeks with Raspberry Wine.
  5. Float irises of eyes with Navy Blue. Let dry. Paint pupils with Licorice. Let dry. Paint Tapioca "sparkles" on irises and pupils.
  6. Paint eyelashes with inky Burnt Umber,


Arms:


  1. Float on arms with Slate Blue
  2. Shade with floated Licorice.

Snowman:


  1. Pounce body with double loaded Tapioca and Burnt Umber.
  2. Paint coal, eyes, mouth and buttons with inky Licorice.
  3. Basecoat carrot nose with Tangerine. Shade with Burnt Umber.
  4. Shade snowman's body with Asphaltum, then Burnt Umber.
  5. Basecoat scarf with Raspberry Wine. Highlight with Tapioca. Let dry. Paint stripes on scarf with double loaded Green Forest and English Mustard and Tapioca. Let dry. Spatter with inky snow textured paint.
  6. Paint twig arms with Licorice. Tap on snow with Tapioca.

Fur Hat Trim & Cuffs


  1. Pounce with English Mustard.
  2. Pounce again with Tapioca.

Beard, Mustache, Eyebrows, & Hair


  1. Pull beard and hair in with inky English Mustard, using the 1/2" rake brush. CUrl hair as you paint.
  2. Pick up Tapioca and wisp in more curls.
  3. Tap in eyebrows with Tapioca.
  4. Use the liner brush to pull out fine Tapioca hairs in all hair areas.

Holly & Berries


  1. Float holly leaves with double loaded Tapioca and Green Forest, using a #8 flat shader.
  2. Dot berries with Burnt Carmine and Raspberry Wine, using handle end of brush. Highlight with Tangerine and Tapioca.
  3. Paint twigs in holly pick with inky Burnt Umber. Highlight with inky Tapioca.
  4. Paint curlicues and other detailing in holly pick with inky Tapioca.




FINISH


  1. Spatter gourd with inky Tapioca for snow. Let dry.
  2. Spray with acrylic sealer.
  3. To make gourd into lamp, cut "hat" of Santa on top large enough to put the lamp part in. Use the cork lamp adapter if possible.
  4. Spatter evergreen tree with inky snow textured paint.
  5. Glue gourd lamp and fence/napkin holder onto oval base. Glue pin sprigs at bottom front of fence and evergreen tree behind napkin holder. Glue a wood sled or other toy on base in front of fence and greenery.
  6. Paint fence (especially top of pickets), toy, pine sprigs, oval base, and top of lamp with snow textured paint.
