Flat brush # 2
Liner brush # 1
Fan brush # 2
1 inch sponge brush
Old toothbrush
Transparant tape
Sandpaper
Tack rag
Wood ballfoot triangular box- Walnut Hollow # 3215


Preparation:

  1. Sand the box, if needed. Wipe with a tack rag.

  2. Paint the entire box above feet with True Burgundy. Paint the underside and ball feet with Pure Black. Let dry.

  3. Apply transparant tape to mask the edges of the triangle on the lid and the upper and lower edges of the sides of the box. Paint the band between tape on box sides and the inner triangle on the lidwith Pure Black. Let dry.

  4. Rub with a piece of brown paper bag to smooth the raised nap of the wood.

  5. Enlarge pattern to desired size. Neatly trace and transfer the designs to box lid and sides.

Paint the Design:

Grass:


  1. Apply a strip of tape along the bottom of the black band. With a #2 fan brush, pull Peridot upwards to form the grass. Let dry,

  2. With a # 1 liner brush and thin Solid Bronze, paint longer blades of grass. Let dry.

  3. Add blades of Peridot. Let dry.

  4. Double load the flat brush with Floating Medium and Burnt Umber. Blend on the palette to soften the color. Shade the base of the grass area by floating on the Burnt Umber. Let dry.

  5. Apply dots of Solid Bronze, Peridot, and Champagne in the grass.

  6. Remove the tape and let dry.

Wings of Open Wing Dragonfly:


  1. Basecoat the entire wing area with two coats of Pearl White. Let dry.

  2. Double load a flat brush with Floating Medium and Amethyst. Shade the wings next to the body with the Amethyst. Let dry.

  3. Double load the flat brush with Floating Medium and Solid Bronze. Float the Solid Bronze over the Amethyst. Let dry.

  4. With a # 1 liner and Pearl White, add the detail lines to the wings.

Wings of Closed Wing Dragonfly:


  1. Basecoat the entire wing area with two coats of Pearl White. Let dry.

  2. Double load a flat brush with Floating Medium and Amethyst and float the shadows on the wings in the open-wing fly instructions. Let dry.

  3. Double load the flat brush with Floating Medium and Blue Sapphire. Float the Blue Sapphire shading next to the body on back wing. Let dry.

  4. Double load the brush with Floating Medium and Solid Bronze. Float the tips of the wings with Solid Bronze. Let dry.

  5. With the #1 liner brush and Pearl White, apply detail lines to the wings.

Green Body Dragonfly:


  1. Undercoat the body with Pearl White. Let dry.

  2. Basecoat the entire body with Peridot. Let dry.

  3. Float Burnt Umber on the left side of the body. Let dry.

  4. Highlight the right side of the body by floating on Pearl White. Let dry.

  5. With a # 1 liner brush and Peridot, paint the legs and the antenna. Shade the legs with Solid Bronze, if desired.

Copper Body Dragonfly:
Follow the same steps used for the green body, except use Solid Bronze instead of Peridot for the base color.

Eyes:


  1. Undercoat eyes with Pearl White. Let dry.

  2. Basecoat the eyes with Blue Sapphire. Let dry.

  3. Shade the eyes by floating on Burnt Umber. Let dry.

  4. Highlight the eyes by floating on Pearl White. Let dry.

  5. Add a dot of Pearl white to highlight.

Finish:


  1. When dry, using toothbrush, flyspeck the sides of the lid with Solid Bronze, taping off all other areas. Remove the tape.

  2. Using a liner brush and Solid Bronze, paint the narrow stripes around edges of Pure Black areas ( band on sides and triangle on lid). Let dry.

  3. When dry, apply two or more coats of waterbase varnish.
