round enamel tray or wood tray (try Walnut Hollow Oval Tray #3566)

Preparation:

  1. If using a wood tray, basecoat with 1-2 coats of Tapioca, Taffy or other light color acrylic paint.
  2. Sand lightly with a piece of a brown paper bag (without printing on it) to smooth the surface.
  3. Transfer pattern, if desired. As the pattern is not absolutely necessary with the “One Stroke” technique, feel free to just begin painting, adding in filler flowers, leaves and other elements as needed.

Instructions:
Roses:

  • Double load #12 flat brush with Yellow Ochre and Sunflower. Side load a bit of Wicker White onto the Sunflower edge of the brush to add contrast.

  • Paint petals with the Sunflower/White side outwards, rippling the edges of the petals.

  • For center, load the mini scruffy brush with Thicket and Yellow Ochre. Pounce center of rose, turning the Yellow Ochre side of the brush downward. Paint a full rose at opposite sides of the plate, then partial roses/buds around sides. (You may also complete just one side of the plate, let dry, then repeat on the other side.)

    Leaves:

Wipe brush. Double load #12 flat with Thicket and Sunflower. Paint leaves near roses with Thicket toward the outside of each leaf. With the same colors, pull short chisel strokes downwards from buds to form calyxes. Fill in with small One Stroke leaves, turning the Thicket side of the brush upward.

    Sweet Pea:

Double load #6 brush with Berry Wine and Wicker White. Paint small Sweet Pea randomly around plate as filler flowers for the design. Paint calyxes and stems as needed (done same as instructions in #2).

    Wisteria:

Double load mini scruffy brush with Plum Chiffon and Wicker White. Form Wisteria accents by pouncing a round area, then pouncing some paint trailing downwards from the round area. Turn the brush as you pounce to add depth.

    Curlicues:

Add a few drops of water to a small area of Thicket to bring the paint to an inky consistency. Paint curlicues with this inky paint, using the script liner and a light touch.

    Finish:
If working on an enamel tray, you may leave as is or brush on a coat of Artist’s Varnish over the painted area of the tray, leaving plain the area of the tray that will touch food. If working on a wood tray, brush on a coat of Artist’s Varnish over the entire tray and let dry. You may keep the tray for decorative purposes only, or place a doily or napkin on the tray prior to serving food on it.
