Preparation - Wash plate and dry thoroughly.
- Clean plate with a cotton pad saturated in alcohol. Dry thoroughly.
- Trace and transfer design.
Painting the design Mums -- Full flowers and petals of buds.- Thin Yellow Ochre with Flow Medium to a transparent consistency. With a 12 or 16 flat brush, loosely stroke color onto plate to establish size and shape of flower. While paint is still wet, add a bit more Yellow Ochre and a tiny amount of Burnt Umber to the dirty brush and stroke this darker mixture inside center of flower and across bottom of upright petals.
- Without allowing paint to dry, switch to a #6 filbert brush and begin stroking petals using the same mixtures mentioned in Step #1. Dry.
- Moisten a #16 flat brush with Flow Medium, sideload in a mixture of Bt. Sienna + small amounts of Dioxazine Purple and shade inside flower and across bottoms of upright and lower petals. Use a liner brush and the same thinned mixture to shade between petals. Let dry.
- Tint flowers by stroking Pure Orange thinned to a transparent consistency with Flow Medium over the flowers.
- Stroke highlights on the lightest petals using a filbert brush and Wicker White + small amounts of Lemon Custard. Let dry.
- Adjust color within the flower if necessary. Thin Yellow Ochre + small amounts of Lemon Custard with Flow Medium and stroke this transparent mixture over any portions of the flower that appear too light (white). Let dry.
Leaves, stems and buds.- Moisten the #20 flat brush with Flow Medium then sideload with a mixture of Hunter Green + Cobalt (about equal amounts). Stroke this mixture across the base (stem end) of the leaves and next to the center on one side of leaf. Let dry. For buds, use a #12 flat brush sideloaded with the same paint mixture.
- Use the same brush (moistened with Flow Medium) and the same mixture of paint to stroke color on outside edges of leaves. Paint the stems with the same transparent mixture of paint and #2 flat brush. Let dry, then add ‘prickles’ to the stems with a liner (flattened when loading with the Hunter Green + Cobalt mixture of paint.) Dry.
- Shade next to the center vein and some outside edges using the same brush, moistened with Flow Medium, and sideloaded with a mixture of equal parts Hunter Green + Cobalt plus a tiny amount of Burnt Umber. Shade stems where they touch other objects (petals, stems or leaves) within the design. Use a flat brush sideloaded with the paint mixture.
- Add tints to one or two leaves using the #20 or #16 flat brush (moistened with Flow Medium) sideloaded with Bt. Sienna + Burnt Umber. Tap the corner of the brush onto the leaf to create splotches. Let dry.
- Stroke highlights on leaves with a mixture of Fresh Foliage + small amounts of Wicker White. Flatten a round brush when loading with paint for this. Use the liner brush and the same mixture of paint to add a few ‘prickles’ with the same light mixture of paint.
- Paint stems to leaves with a liner and a mixture of equal parts Hunter Green + Cobalt plus a small amount of Coffee Bean.
- Paint veins in leaves. The center vein is Fresh Foliage + small amounts of Wicker White. Side veins are the same mixture on dark areas of leaves. On light areas, use the Hunter Green + Cobalt.
- Allow all to dry before continuing.
Tint the Background With Color- First, moisten the surface with Flow Medium. Then, while the surface is still wet, brush on small amounts of Dioxazine Purple thinned with Flow Medium. Blend so that the color is soft and indistinct. Use the same flat brush for this, then give a final blending with a soft mop. Let dry. Tip: More than one application of paint can be used. Allow paint to dry thoroughly between applications. It is more desirable to use two thin layers of paint rather than one that is too opaque.
- With a cosmetic sponge wedge, stroke gold accents on edges of plate. Squeeze a dollop of metallic Gold onto a waxed palette. Dab the narrow end of a cosmetic sponge wedge into the paint and rub in a circular motion on the palette before stroking on edges of plate.
