White rural mailbox - standard size
Tracing paper
Transfer paper
Pencil
Rubbing Alcohol
Lint Free Cloth

Preparation
  1. Wipe the surface with the cloth and rubbing alcohol.
  2. Attach the template to the surface. Load the 3/4" scruffy with Soft Apple. Pounce to fill in the template. Lift the template while the paint is still wet. Allow to dry completely. Note: Use a blow dryer to quicken the drying time.
  3. Reapply the template and repeat the steps to cover the mailbox. Turn the template to keep the pattern random.
  4. Trace and transfer and pattern.
Paint the Design
Paint the same element on both sides of the mailbox before proceeding to the next element.

Iris
Refer to the Iris & Daffodil Painting Worksheet
Double load the 3/4" flat brush with Violet Pansy and Purple Lilac. Add a touch of Wicker White to the Purple Lilac side and a touch of Dioxazine Purple to the Violet Pansy side. Using the flat side of the brush and keeping the Violet Pansy/Dioxazine Purple to the outer edge, paint th petals that form the iris. Keep the brush angled and wiggle in the same direction. Lift to the chisel at the tip before changing directions.

Stems & Blade Leaves

Refer to the Leaf Painting Worksheet.

  1. Double load the 3/4" flat brush with Thicket and Grass Green. Using the chisel edge of the brush and leading with the Grass Green, add a stem to each iris.
  2. Using the same brush and colors but using the flat side of the brush, pull the long blade leaves out from the center of the design. Use more pressure to make the leaves widen. Turn the brush to lead with the Grass Green side, easing the pressure and coming up on the chisel edge to make the tips.
Spring Flowers
Refer to the Iris & Spring Flower Painting Worksheet.
  1. Load the #12 flat brush with Yellow Ochre, then add a touch of Wicker White to one corner of the brush. Allow the Yellow Ochre to remain the dominant color. Using the flat side of the brush and keeping the Yellow Ochre to the outer edge, paint the first layer of petals.
  2. Using the same brush and colors, flop the brush to keep the Wicker White to the outer edge. Paint the inner layer of petals.
  3. Using the same brush and colrs, paint the buds. Keep the Wicker White to the outer edge first, then the Yellow Ochre to the outer edge for the top petals.
  4. Using the bottle tip of Fresh Foliage Dimensional, pull stamens into the center of the main flower.
Stem & One Stroke Leaves
Refer to the Leaf Painting Worksheet.
  1. Double load the #12 flat brush with Thicket and Grass Green. Using the chisel edge of the brush and leading with Grass Green, paint the stems for the buds.
  2. Using the same brush and colors and the flat side of the brush, paint the one stroke leaves located throughout the design.
  3. Pull a stem into each leaf by using the chisel edge and leading with the Grass Green.
Butterflies
Refer to the Butterflies Painting Worksheet, using the colors listed here.
  1. Double load the #12 flat brush with Violet Pansy and Purple Lilac. Add a touch of Wicker White to the Purple Lilac side and a touch of Dioxazine Purple to the Violet Pansy side. Using the flat side of the brush and keeping the Violet Pansy/Dioxazine Purple to the outer edge, paint the wings for the butterflies.
  2. Using the bottle tip of Fresh Foliage Dimensional, paint the butterfly bodies and antennae.
Dimensional Details
