Preparation
- Clean all glass surfaces with rubbing alcohol and try not to touch the surface again. Use a paper towel to hold the cleaned surface while you are painting.
- Mark the center of each ornament with the pencil. Mark an oval on both sides of the oval ornament.
Painting
Basic Tips - While doing this technique, work from the inside of the design towards the outer edges to avoid getting your hand in your finished work. If you make a mistake, dip a stiff brush in alcohol and carefully remove the error.
- Just barely have the metal tip touching the surface as you work.
- If possible, rest your forearm on the edge of the table as you work for stability.
- Practice firts on paper before going to your surface to get the “feel” of applying the Enamels in this manner. You are using straight lines, curved lines, modified commas and dots.
- Hold the bottle as you would a pencil when applying the Enamels and use the different tips for different line widths.
- If you find you have breaks in your lines, you are moving too fast. Slow down and allow the paint to flow out of the tip. Apply gentle pressure on the bottle itself.
- No patterns are needed as it really is easier to just create the designs as you go – you are just repeating elements over and over.
- Commas are created by touching the tip down to the surface and counting to three while applying pressure on the bottle to form the head, then releasing pressure and pulling down to form the tail.
- The tips come in fine, Extra Fine and Super fine. Practice to see which ones work best for you.
- Create one side and one half of the edge, let dry overnight, then create the other side.
- Form three thick lines with Engine Red and the Fine metal tip.
- With Lemon Custard, form the light with upside down straight commas.
- Greenery– zigzag straight lines of Evergreen. Add Engine Red dots for holly after letting the Evergreen dry a bit.
- Place dots of Gold all along the outer edge in the ornament indentation.
- Create arcs of Evergreen and when you get to the last two arcs adjust the size to fit the space that is left.
- Add commas of Gold where each arc dips. Three dots of Gold at top of each arc and top of each comma. Engine Red dots in each arc.
For the edge design, evenly space seven large dots of Lemon Custard for the flower centers. Five Engine Red dots around the center to form the flower. Long, straight commas of Evergreen pulled out from the side of each flower to indicate leaves.
