Flats -- #2;6;8;12 |

Stiff Scruffy Brush |

Old Window Sash -- 20" x 45-1/2" |
 |
Birch plywood cut to fit back of window |
 |
White pigmented sealer such as Kilz |
 |
Small wood screws |
 |
Clear Acrylic Matte Sealer |

Prepare- Seal the plywood. Let dry.
- Sand the surface, then wipe away the sanding dust with a slightly damp towel.
- Trace the design. Reduce or enlarge to fit your window sash. Transfer.
Paint the Design See the Winter Garden Worksheet. Background (Sky & Ground) Use the #12 flat brush to apply the following mixes in short, overlapping strokes, using a small amount of Blending Gel to extend the drying time so that colors can be blended: Warm White and Brilliant Ultramarine. Warm White and Brilliant Ultramarine and Dioxazine Purple. Warm White and Brilliant Ultramarine and Pure Magenta.
Fence & Tree- Paint the fence with a brush-mix of Warm White and Burnt Umber and Payne's Gray and Brilliant Ultramarine.
- Paint the tree with the same mix and a little more Burnt Umber.
- Accent the shadow side of the fence with Warm White and Brilliant Ultramarine.
- Highlight the fence with Warm White.
Garden Bench- Paint the bench with the same mix used for the tree.
- Shade with the same mix and a little more Burnt Umber and Payne's Gray.
- Highlight with Warm White and a tiny bit of Yellow Ochre.
Cardinals- Paint the cardinals with Alizarian Crimson.
- Paint the dark areas with Pure Black.
- Highlight with Pure Orange and a little Alizarian Crimson.
Sparrows- Paint the sparrows with a brush-mix of Warm White and Burnt Umber and Payne's Gray.
- Paint dark areas with Burnt Umber and Pure Black.
- Highlight with Warm White and a tiny bit of Yellow Ochre.
Snow & Shadows- Add shadows under and to the right of each bird.
- Add highlights in the snow and snow drifts on the fence and bench with Warm White.
- Paint shadows on the ground with Warm White and Brilliant Ultramarine, Dioxazine Purple and a touch of Pure Black.
Snowflakes Thin Warm White slightly with water to a thick and creamy consistency. Tip a stiff bristle brush in the paint and spatter the painted surface by running your fingertip across the bristles. Let dry.
Finish- Seal the painting with Matte Sealer. Let dry.
- Attach the painting to the window with screws.
- Paint snow drifts on the outside of the window panes with Warm White.
