FolkArt Color Trend: DIY Watercolor Dreamcatcher

FolkArt Color Trend: DIY Watercolor Dreamcatcher

Inspired by the magical legend of dreamcatchers, our design team curated a gorgeous color palette for our latest FolkArt Color Trend!  Dream catchers are rooted in the Native American tradition of hanging a dreamcatcher over your bed. The dreamcatcher lets positive dreams slip through and down the feathers to the person sleeping below, while negative ones are ‘caught.’

Work the whimsical spirit of the dreamcatcher into your home with these fresh hues and our three enchanting project ideas!

Don't you just love the colors in this piece? We're imagining it as a part of a gallery wall!

How to Make a DIY Dreamcatcher

Supplies:
  • FolkArt® Multi-Surface Acrylic Paint: 2897 Pink Melon, 2914 Lime Green, 2921 Aqua, 2922 Deep Ocean Blue, 2928 Lavender, 2933 Medium Gray, 2940 Baby Pink, 2945 Camel
  • FolkArt® Large Painting Stencil - 30739 Lite Felt Tip Marker
  • Wood embroidery hoop, 10”
  • Watercolor paper, Canvas paper, Wax paper
  • Flat brush ½”, Stencil brush ¼”
  • Assorted yarns, trims and embroidery floss to match your color palette
  • Feathers, Needle, Small hole punch, Spray bottle for water, Scissors, Pencil, Glue
  • Paper towels, Foam plates, Water basin

First, we'll create the 'feathers' that are actually made out of watercolor paper! Get the organic feather imprint by using real feathers as a 'stamp.' Here's how to make paper feathers:

  1. To create your paper feathers, lay a feather on a paper towel and apply paint with paint brush. Place paint side down on a piece of watercolor paper. Cover with wax paper and press with your fingers until the whole feather has been printed. Carefully remove wax paper and feather.
  2. Repeat process with additional feathers and different paint colors. Hang on to your actual painted feathers as they can be used in your dream catcher.
  3. Cut out feathers with scissors leaving a slightly rounder section at the end of the feather. Punch holes in end of paper feather to hang.

Next, we'll make the centerpiece of the dreamcatcher using a cool hack to create a watercolor effect.

Step 1: Use the embroidery hoop to trace a circle onto the watercolor paper.

Step 2: Using a spray bottle saturate the watercolor paper with water.

Step 3: Using a stencil brush, paint various colors onto the wet watercolor paper.

Step 4: Continue to spray the paper and apply paint until desired coverage and effect is reached.

Step 5: Water down a contrasting color and tap the brush on your finger to create a splatter effect.

Step 6: Cut out along the embroidery hoop line.
