Mod Podge and Decoupage Trends

Amy Anderson
Decoupage

Did you know that Mod Podge has been around for over 40 years? Yes, the brand could be old enough to be your mother! Decoupage will always be popular, but the trends change with the seasons. You may be wondering what is hot with Mod Podge right now. We’ve identified the three most popular decoupage trends to get your creative juices flowing!

Recycled/Refurbished – Whether you’ve had that dresser in your closet for as long as you can remember or you just bought it at the Goodwill, Mod Podge is perfect for turning a piece of trash into a treasure. A few ideas:
• Give your piece a fresh coat of paint and use a formula such as Glitter or Shimmer for a unique finish.
• Randomly place paper scraps from your stash or old photos on your recycled piece. Personalization is popular and makes a project great for a gift.
• The decoupage doesn’t have to be immediately visible—consider using Mod Podge to adhere paper to the inside of a bookcase or display case.

Fabric – Decoupaging fabric is fun and much easier than it looks! The advantage of using fabric is that it can be purchased in large pieces to cover large surfaces. It is also very flexible and doesn’t crease around corners like paper. Fabric decoupage is perfect for furniture, but can also be used on smaller items, such as frames and even jewelry. Pay special attention to these fabric preparation steps:
• Wash and dry the fabric (do not use fabric softener). Iron out all the wrinkles.
• Lay the fabric out on a covered work surface. Wax paper is preferable for covering your table.
• Using a brush, paint a light coat of Fabric Mod Podge onto your fabric. Allow to dry. This will allow you to cut the fabric like paper without frayed edges.

Vintage Style – It doesn’t have to be old, it just has to look old! Vintage papers, photos and ephemera are easy to find, either in your attic or at your local craft retailer. Subdued colors, old  travel postcards and even distressed handwritten letters can give your project an old world feel. Here’s how to incorporate decoupage into this trend:
• Grab a canvas and create a collage with many of the items listed above. Paint your background, use Mod Podge to attach your goods and then use distressing ink to obtain the vintage look.
• Check your local Goodwill or Freecycle for vintage items (such as a train case) that need a facelift. Then refurbish with decoupage as suggested above!
• Accent a finished project with vintage buttons from your great-grandmother’s collection. Use Mod Podge as a glue to attach them.
