Laurie Korsgaden
Bucilla Needle Crafts
Watercolorist Laurie Korsgaden has enjoyed art since childhood. Through her art she depicts her love of gardening and animals. Every brushstroke is done with beauty and detail.
While working towards her degree at California State University, Laurie combined her artistic abilities with her studies in biology and zoology; she created medical illustrations for a legal service, and she designed scratchboard illustrations for a whale study at the Cabrillo Museum in San Pedro, California.
Lucky for Plaid, Laurie did not continue in the medical illustration direction. In 1993, she began using watercolor as her primary medium. At that time she began to sell prints of her artwork throughout the world. Her artwork appears through licenses on a variety of products, such as gift bags, kitchen textiles, cookie jars, and our own Bucilla stitch kits.
Our designers have adapted her artwork into cross-stitch patterns. Many of her Bucilla kits come in coordinating pairs, such as her "Home" and "Bath" kits. Her recognizable style is evident in her many depictions of gardening, fruit and animals.
Laurie advises beginning designers to follow trends in the retail industry if they hope to pursue licensing contracts. "Be persistent in providing samples to the buyer, because everyone has different tastes and needs," she says. "No matter how may times you may be turned down, never give up because success may be just around the corner."
